On Friday 6th October 2017, we were lucky enough to be joined by Andy Tooze, ‘The Poet from the Peaks’. He read some of his own poems, led workshops with every class and signed copies of his book ‘The Poetry Bug’. It was an amazing day and the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience; they showed a real enthusiasm for listening to, reciting and writing poetry.
In Foundation and Year 1/2, Andy supported the children to write whole class poems entitled ‘Ourselves’ and ‘Superheroes’. The children in Y1/2 became illustrators for one of his poems and the winner received a free copy of Andy’s book. In Key Stage 2, he shared his ‘top tips’ for writing poetry and the children composed their own poems about animals in Y3/4 and body parts in Y5/6.
Andy loved his time at Shortbrook and we hope to book a return visit in the future.
‘The pupils were so engaged with their education. It was truly inspirational to spend a day in such a wonderful environment with staff who exemplify the very best of their profession.’ Andy Tooze

As you might have seen we have started a walking bus in a morning to assist some children in getting to school on time. We have initially said we will trial it until Christmas to see if it has the desired impact. If you are interested in your child/ren joining the walking bus please see the school office. If numbers do start to increase we will need volunteers to help as we have to stick to strict adult : child ratios. If you are interested in helping whether its everyday or just one day, please call into the school office and ask to speak to Mrs Boothroyd or Mrs Wileman.
Next week we are holding our charity clothing collection in support of the Starlight charity. This charity uses the money it collects to brighten the lives of seriously ill children. The collection bags will be sent home with the children. Please fill them with adult and children's clothing, underwear, socks, coats, paired shoes and hand bags. Please do not fill with school uniform, bedding or household textiles. Hand your filled bags into the school reception next week in readiness for the collection on Tuesday 1st November. Thank you
On Thursday 3rd March 2016, our pupils came to school dressed as their favourite book character! All the children's costumes were fantastic and a lot of effort was made by parents also, so thank you. The children even received a special appearance from Wolverine! Take a look at just some of our fabulous costumes below.
Our choir worked extremely hard practising for months and learning new dance moves. Click here to see our pictures from the event.
Pupils were very excited to watch M&M theatrical productions performance of Sleeping Beauty! What a treat! Take a look on the website to see their amazing work. Click here.
Our Y6 pupils recently visited Crucial Crew which is made up of activities set by South Yorkshire Police to educate young people in dealing with real life situations. Hopefully all children that attended gained a very valuable lesson.
