Personal, Social and Emotional Development 


The children will learn to:

  • Keep play going by repsonding to what others are saying or doing
  • Enjoy responsibility of carrying out tasks
  • Accept the needs of others, take turns and share resources, sometimes with support from adults


At home you could

  • Encourage your child to chat about their day.
  • Do they know who to talk to if things go wrong or they feel unhappy?
  • Give your child simple tasks to do at home and praise positive       behaviour.
  • Play turn taking games.


Areas of learning

In Nursery we will use some of the children’s ideas and interests to enhance learning.

Let  Nursery Staff know if your child has specific interests.



Communication and Learning

  • Listen to other one to one or in small groups, when conversation interests them
  • Listen to stories with increasing attention and recall
  • Show understanding of prepositions such as 'under', 'on top', 'behind' by carrying out an action or selecting correct picture
  • Begin to understand 'why' and 'how' questions


At home you could

  • Go on a ‘Listening walk’ outdoors and   encourage your child to say what sounds they can hear.
  • Share a story book each day with your child; talk about the pictures together.
  • Place a special toy on, under or  at the side of, a chair and ask them to tell you where it is.


Physical Development

  • Imitates drawing simple shapes such as circles and lines
  • Move freel and with pleasure and confidence in a range of ways, such as slithering, shuffling, rolling, crawling, walking, running, jumping, skipping, sliding and hopping
  • Hold pencil near point between first two fingers and thumb and use it with good control
  • observe the effects of activity on their bodies
  • Understand that equipment and tools have to be used safely


At home you could

  • Let your child sprinkle a pinch of decorations on a cake (100s & 1000s).
  • Give them a banana to chop using a round ended knife.
  • Have running races and show your child where to find their heart beat-is it fast or slow?



  • Show awareness of rhyme
  • Begin to be aware of the way stories are structured: What happens at the beginning, middle and end of a story
  • Descibe main story settings, events ans principal characters
  • Extend vocabulary using the stories for talking approach
  • Become aware of print in their environment



  • Knows that number identify how many objects are in a set
  • Recite numbers in order to 10 as they clap and jump
  • Sometimes matches numeral and quantity correctly


Areas of Learning

  • We will focus on winter and the changes in our environment. We will teach children to look at contrasts such as 'Hot and Cold'
  • All children will gain ICT skills using programmes suitable for young children on the interactive whiteboard
  • We will be talking Baby Bear going to the moon and learning about planets
  • We will explore diversity


Expressive Arts and Design

  • Explores colour and how colours can be changed
  • Beginning to the interested in and descibe the texture of things
  • Uses available resources to create props to support role-play
