Additional and Special Needs

Shortbrook Primary School supports many children with a wide range of additional and special needs. For some children these needs are ongoing, for others it may be a shorter term interaction.

Some children come to our school with clearly identified needs whilst others may be seeking a better understanding of their difficulties as they grow older.
Our top priority is to ensure that the day to day teaching for our children is right, resulting in happy and confident children who move forwards with their learning and maximise their potential in every way possible. Through close and regular monitoring of progress, both academically and emotionally, and through close communication with parents we are able to target our support in a range of ways individually tailored for each child. This can include additional in-class support, small group support or even one-to-one support.
As well as providing a wide range of help in school we link closely with other outside agencies to provide support for our children and their families. We enjoy close links with the Speech and Language Service, the Autism Support Service and Educational Psychologists. These services can provide advice and assessment when needed but also the reassurance to parents that school are catering well for our most vulnerable pupils.
The Multi Agency Support Team (MAST) can provide a wide range of services for our children/families and when required provide support outside of school

Did you know about the Short Breaks Grant Scheme?

The Short Break Grant Programme provides a one-off payment up to a maximum of £400 per family to support parents or carers of disabled children and young people to access a short break at times that provide the greatest benefit to them as a family. The payment can be for things such as gym membership, day trips, a contribution to a holiday, cinema tickets etc.

New Code of Practice

A new Code of Practice was made statutory on 1st September 2014. There are some changes that are currently being implemented across the Family of Schools, although we feel confident as a group of SENCOs that we are already meeting lots of the  requirements from the new Code.
